Re: Boat Building Made Easy...

Dear Fellow Dream Boat Enthusiasts,

I was just like most of you when I began in the great hobby of building boats.

My fascination with boats began as a very young child. My father would take me out to harbor, and I'd watch the boats bringing in the "catch of the day". It all seemed so magically to me as I think back to my childhood.

As my love of all things marine grew, my father started to take notice. On my 12th birthday, my father took me to the tiny woodshop behind our house. On the table was laying some type of a blueprint or plans for a project. My father was quite the handyman and was always working on something around the house, but these wooden boat plans looked much different than any I had seen in the past.

My Passion For Boats Started As A Young Child

He continued to tell me that this was my birthday present. A piece of paper? I have to say for a moment I was incredibly disappointed. My father then proceeded to explain that these plans would help us to build my first model boat... I know, not what you were thinking. Because of our financial circumstances, my father and I were never able to construct anything larger than a simple model, but my passion for boats only grew.

Things worked out well for me after I left home. I got a good job and made a wage that was more than adequate to cover my family's expenses and even put some back. On a trip back home after the death of my father, I was going through some of his old things and found that first boat we'd built together. I'd be lying if I said it didn't bring back some of the best memories of my life. I loved building those tiny boats and always dreamt about building the "real thing".

I Purchased My First Set Of Boat Plans

And Got To Work... How Exciting!

When I got back home, I found a local shop that had plans for a small dinghy. It was a very basic boat, but I ran home with the boat building plans and got to work. I'd done this several times before, just on a smaller scale.

However, after slaving away for countless hours and using any spare time that I had on my project, I realized that it was not coming together as easily as I had thought. The plans I had purchased were incredibly difficult to understand and left a lot to be desired. I ended up guessing and basically had a half-finished boat that could not be salvaged.

Or Was It? These Boat Plans Could

Have Been Written In Greek

I went out and purchased some more wooden boat plans, not really knowing exactly what I wanted to build. Once again, I forked over more cash on some plans that could have been written in Greek! I spent far too much on materials as the plans just weren't clear and once again I ended up with a half-finished boat.

After spending thousands of dollars on my childhood dream hobby, I was on the verge of just giving it all up. Trust me; at that point, my wife would have been incredibly happy if I had. My "hobby" was stressing me out and I still did not have a completed boat to show for the time and money I had invested.

Another Half-Finished Boat Almost Caused Me

To Give Up On Boat Building Forever

I'm sure most of you have been there at some point... you've put your blood, sweat, and tears into a new project and get stumped somewhere along the way.

"Look. The worst part is when your significant other or one of your friends asks that inevitable question, "How's that boat coming along?" Nothing is more disappointing than starting something and not being able to finish it. I've been there, and it feels lousy."

Just when I was about to give it all up, through sheer luck, I was fortunate enough to be introduced to a local, master boat builder. He held my hand over the next year and would help me "fill in the gaps" on the boat plans I had purchased. This gentleman truly took an interest in me and my passion for boats. I think he was just trying to give something back...

It Took The Mentoring Of A Master Boat Builder

To Complete My First Boat

Eventually, my skills improved, and I could proudly say that I had completed my first wooden boat. Without that man's knowledge, I never would have succeeded on my own by solely using the low quality, expensive boat plans that are commonly available.

And what I discovered was this: Building boats is not hard if you have a step-by-step approach to follow.

31 years later, I'm still building boats.Over the years, I've amassed over 500 of my own boat plans!

In order to help out some of my friends that also participate in this great past-time, I decided to go above and beyond and include simple, easy-to-follow, step by step instructions with all of my boat plans. Since I don't have the time to mentor every person I meet that is interested in learning to build boats, I felt like this was the best way to give back...

After 31 Years Of Boat Building,

I'm Giving Something Back...

The illustrated plans and boat building guides that I've created are of such high quality, that those that I've shared them with have said it's just not right to keep these stashed away in a private archive only to be seen by a select few...

"If you're anything like me, you just can't stomach the thought of spending thousands of dollars on a factory made boat. Well, I have good news for you, YOU DON'T HAVE TO!"

That is because I decided to compile them into a collection and offer them to all boat builders so you can benefit from my 31 years of experience and feel like you have a master boat builder guiding you through each and every boat project. one step at a time.

" Excellent Details With

Step-By-Step Instructions "

What a great collection! I had a hard time putting this down and find myself going back often to compare boat designs. There are enough different designs to satisfy most boat builders. The plans are excellent in detail with step-by-step instructions and this has saved me so much time. I've spent weeks looking for stuff like this. Well worth the few bucks.

This Is The Real Deal...

Informative & Inspiring

I bought these plans and building started last June 12th and it was ready to launch August 8th . I've been building boats since I was 11 years old...a long time ago!...and wish these plans were around, then. Martin Reid is the real deal. His materials are very informative and inspiring...an excellent investment for anyone who is interested in building boats.

Hope you enjoy the pictures attached. I am 65 years old but still chasing the dream as you see from my smile in the boat.

"There's Literally Nothing Else Like These

Boat Plans On The Market Today"

That's a statement I do not take lightly. I've been bulding boats for almost 31 years and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars

                                    Build Your Own

                                   Trailered Houseboat

Our Dream was to build a boat and vacation on it! Not just any boat. We wanted to build a boat that could be trailered, have room and amenities to live aboard during vacation and use as a camper along the way.

After looking at factory built boats it was plain to see that a family with children just did not have money for luxuries like a houseboat.

So, we built our Dream Boat right in our back yard and you can too! The hull was constructed of local lumberyard materials and covered with fiberglass. The end result was a craft that out performed factory built boats at a fraction of the cost. Plus, there is a special feeling knowing you built your boat yourself. It becomes more than a boat, it becomes part of your family and I can not think of a better family or school project.

                          SEE PICTURES FROM PLANS

Amateur boat building is huge around the world. Canal boats, pontoon boats, houseboats and just about any type of factory built boat can be constructed by the back yard boat builder.

Over the years we have received many questions about how we built this boat and what materials we used. We have answered all these and more in our book Dream Building.

This book is packed with information and humor about how we built and cruised our own boat affectionately named the "Fair Havens". It is loaded with photographs and answers to questions that arise with such a project. . If you are planning to build your own boat, or you are looking for a great family project, this book is for you! Even if you do not build this particular boat, the information you get will be invaluable even when building from other boat plans.

One of the repeated themes we share in Dream Building is how we used local supplies. This saved us a lot of money without sacrificing the quality of our boat. However it took a lot of research time. We share all our research with you so you can spend time on your boat!

This book is not all about boat construction. We share the story of our Maiden Cruise up the Florida Intercoastal Waterway from Cocoa Beach to St Augustine. Enjoy our Florida Key cruises where our family vacationed for many years staying, not in expensive hotels, but on our boat.

You will experience an average family building their dream boat together...

After a long time we narrowed our selection to two boats found in the catalog. The sleek Raven, and the homely Gypsy. The Raven had it all. She was a 27 ft. trailerable cabin cruiser with sleek lines. The cabin had nice berthing, galley and head. I could see myself coming into dock as all drooled over my mini yacht. The Gypsy on the other hand had all except looks. She was a homely boat but very practical. She did have a very shallow draft, which I wanted for the Florida lakes. Also, the Gypsy could be used as a camper, and I thought the layout was more practical for a family with children. So, with the children chanting, "Raven, Raven," I picked up the phone and ordered the Gypsy Plans! I never regretted this decision, and soon the family came to love the homely Gypsy that we christened the "Fair Havens."

To the excitement of the Maiden Voyage!

That night the children wanted to sleep on the bow porch, which I agreed to. I noticed as I went to bed that along the shoreline you could hear small minnows splashing. So we fell asleep with a gentle rocking of the boat and the soothing splash of those minnows. Around 4 A.M. I awoke and noticed the splashing of the minnows was very close, so I tried to get up to investigate. However, I couldn’t sit up, because the bow of the boat was angled down. Still being half asleep, the thought came to me that I should not have let the kids sleep on the bow porch, because their weight was pulling the bow down. Then I jolted awake with the realization that something was terribly wrong!

BAJA SIDEWINDER

NOTE that the picture with people in the Baja Sidewinder is a factory Picture. the other picturs are current pictures of the sidewinder.

Baja Sidewinder SEE LISTING BOTTOM PAGE

We can’t say it enough there’s no better Leisure Time Desire then being on the water any possible way. Our favorite is in a great boat. We got our Baja Sidewinder in 1998 new. There was no better way of enjoying performance boating and leisure time then in the Baja Sidewinder. It may be a mini speedster but it’s just as smooth solid and ferocious as any Baja.

The Baja Sidewinders super maneuverability gives you the feeling of riding a miniature rocket. I mean serious, heart- pounding power. When ever I took folks for a ride they would call it the carnival ride boat. (Baja Sidewinder) You can’t get a Baja Sidewinder anymore they were a limited edition and only made for a couple years. One unique thing, the steering is on the same side as US Autos. You can see some pictures near this post.

We would often just boat up to the beach and stand in the water next to the Baja Sidewinder. It was great fun we were not the only one’s enjoying our Leisure Time that way we made many friends in the hot sun cool water and with a couple cold one’s. If you haven’t tried it I high recommend it. Of course you won’t be able to do it in a Baja Sidewinder unless you find a used one like the 1998 Baja Sidewinder listed on this site.

Other great fun with the Baja Sidewinder was the poker runs. You’ll never forget your first poker run and you’ll keep talking about your last. These fun-filled Leisure Time family events attract performance boaters from all walks of life and performance boating at it’s best and fastest. If you have a chance to be in a poker run it’s just another way to enjoy a Leisure Time Desire on the water and maybe just maybe in your own Baja Sidewinder.

We also used the Baja Sidewinder to pull our friends across the water. Talk about laughs you couldn’t stop. Just watching some friends do a flip off a tube then come up laughing so hard they couldn’t breath was catching to even those watching. When there was a spat about who was next I knew they loved getting wiped out as much as the others liked seeing it. The Baja Sidewinder has the power you need to pull ski and knee boarders too.

Sometimes The lady in my life just wanted some stress relieve. Nothing better then to jump on the Baja Sidewinder and open her up. A few splashes of water in the face and flying over a couple big waves will give you what you need to forget about the days problems. One thing you won’t forget is that heart- pounding power.

Then when everyone has gone and the sun was setting you can’t match the beauty on the water. It was time to lower the throttle turn on the mood lights as I prefer to call them and enjoy a slow cruse over the water under the sky lit stars. If your lucky you may have a kiss of moon light across the water to light your way. A Great end to a great day and one of our favorite Leisure Time Desires boating in the Baja Sidewinder.

BAJA SIDEWINDER BOAT

BAJA SIDEWINDER

1998

This is a Limited Edition Baja sidewinder 1998 boat taken care of. I'm the original owner. There are very few Baja Sidewinders boats around they were made for only a couple of years. The fastest I ever got her up to was 62 MPH trimmed up when I first got her. NOTE where the steering wheel is! This Baja sidewinder boat was around $30,000.00 new. This Baja Sidewinder boat can be seen at Leisure Time Desires or on e-bay by clicking on one of the links should you have a question e-mail me.

I have a new boat and will take about what I owe to get out from under the Baja Sidewinder payments. Around $9,400.00 Additions to this Baja besides the factory specs below are a dual wheel trailer. If you check Nada which is always low make sure the trailer is reflected and it is a FRESH water boat. Also add the following Dual batteries, Boat cover, swim step fiberglass, fold ladder stainless, exhaust high performance, Hydraulic trim tabs. You get around $9,410 which does not include these extras. Then add Dual axle trailer which I'm not sure about the value. I should also add that the trailer has only been used twice a year, once to put the boat in at a nearby marina since I live on the water and once to take it out. The tires still look new when clean.

This Baja Sidewinder is in very good condition when you consider the year. I'm over 50 years old and I have taken care of it and it runs great. You will be getting a good boat. Also add triple bilge pumps, cig lighter and newer cockpit cover.

There's a couple life jackets in it. Tires on trailer excellent no spare. All required nav. lights. Two Cockpit courtesy lights.

Extra's Two life vests, Anchor & Line like new Kneeboard, Dock line, Bumpers, Winter cover, Ski or knee board prop. Anchor light.
